Born and raised in Murphy, North Carolina Johnny Chastain grew up in a family that was known for fast cars. Growing up around his father’s drag cars and hot rods he raced motorcycles a little, but he didn’t start racing stock cars on area dirt ovals until he was 20 years old.
For the first two years he raced in the Enduro class at Tri-County Race Track. After two years of Enduro racing he bought a Barry Wright Late Model from Dale McDowell and started racing in the top division at local race tracks. In his first three years, running his own team, he won the track championship at Sugar Creek Raceway. In 2000 he teamed up with local car owner Randall Twiggs and started racing out of Twiggs’ Garage.
In the five years since joining forces Chastain and Twiggs have garnered five more track championships. Four at Tri-county Raceway and one more at Sugar Creek.
At the start of the 2004 season Chastain and Twiggs picked up sponsorship from Colortyme of Murphy. With the new black and green Colortyme paint scheme on the familiar Twiggs 00 car they won their fourth Late Model championship at Tri-County.
Colortyme’s owner Darryl Rose continued to work on additional sponsorship for the team. Through Colortyme’s Corporate offices he was able to secure additional sponsorship with Mitsubishi, JVC, Phillips, Ashley Furniture and Toshiba. This sponsorship has enabled the team to update their engine and racing program for 2005.
In 2005 look for Chastain, Twiggs and Colortyme to begin traveling more. The team plans to run for Rookie of the Year on the O’Reilly Southern All Star Series (SAS) and race locally when there are no SAS races scheduled.
